Puigcerdà, the capital of La Cerdanya, was founded in 1178 by King Alfonso I of Aragon, Count of Barcelona. Puigcerdà is located near the river Segre and on the border with France (it abuts directly onto the French town of Bourg-Madame).

La Cerdanya is one of the widest valleys of Europe, with a clear diversity and scenic beauty: alpine meadows, forests, beeches … nature characteristic of northern Europe and alpine mountains with peaks reaching 3,000 m above sea level, which has resulted in a rich diversity of ecosystems. It lies in the centre of the Catalan Pyrenees (Spain), between France, Andorra and the districts of El Ripollès, El Berguedà and L’Alt Urgell.
